Rejuvenation the Ayurveda Way

I am treating myself to a 5-day “Rejuvenation” Ayurvedic Spa Treatment, and today was Day 1.  For those unfamiliar with this type of massage, Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term, made up of the words "ayus" and "veda." "Ayus" means life and "Veda" means knowledge or science. The term "ayurveda" thus means 'the knowledge of life' or 'the science of life'. Widely regarded as the oldest form of healthcare in the world, Ayurveda is an intricate medical system that originated in India thousands of years ago.
The modern day version in India has a large range, from high-end spas in 5-Star Hotels that are pretty fru-fru, to the humble doctor’s treatment office and facilities.  They all involve oiling the body while massaging it, and usually some nice smelling herbs.
Here’s a quick run-down of what my “rejuvenation” treatment consisted of.  First I take off all my clothes and put on a large loin cloth.  The lights are low, thankfully. When I walk in the room, the 2 women are stirring some hot milk over a fire.  First oil is applied in a rubbing motion, front and back.  It is warm, and it smells wonderful.  I feel a lot like a basted turkey rolling around on the wooden table, and hope there is a secure rim around the outside so I don't slip off.  Next the women take the herbs which are bound in cheesecloth, and dip it into the hot milk, and apply it all over my body. Three of them work together and apply it on both sides at the same time.

That goes on for about 30-40 minutes.  I am extremely relaxed.
Next they take banana leaves which are in long, narrow rectangles, and use them like a squeegee to get the goo off my skin.
Finally, I go to another room and sit while a powder/granule mixture of green dahl is applied on the skin.  I am invited to take a bucket bath if I like.  I did.  My skin feels super soft, and remind me of how it felt after the Turkish massage in Istanbul.  I’m glad I’m going back tomorrow.  The doctor saw some brown sunspots on my hands, pointed to them, and said, “In 5 days, all gone!”…. Let’s see about that.  I don’t care if miracles happen, it’s very relaxing feels and smells wonderful, and I’m doing it with my new friend and colleague who is a lot of fun to be with.  What’s not to like?

  3. Sounds so soothing! The American insurance system should add this type of massage to preventive health care visits.
